Environmental Sensitivity to oil spill and Landscape Units mapping in Maranhão Port area

Abstract

Several oil spill round around the world had forced institutions to improve preventive and reactive methods of diagnostic and cleaning. The environmental sensitivity map aims to minimize damages by potential oil spill. The methodology includes an Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) represented by a numeric scale from 1 to 10. The index considers information about energy of wave an tidal, coast inclination, substrate type and landscape units recognition. There were 18 landscape units identified using high resolution image Ikonos, field observation and Geographical Information System. The maps are in 1:10.000 scale. The study area is Itaqui-Bacanga (Maranhã) where an intense flux activity occurs in Itaqui port. The results point out to high and low areas sensible to oil spill, as: (ISA 10D) Mangroves, (ISA 9A) Low banks and tidal flats, (ISA 9B) Vegetated low banks and tidal flats, (ISA 8A) Sheltered scarps in bedrock (Paleo-cliff), (ISA 7) Exposed sand tidal flats, (ISA 3B) Scarps and steep slopes in sand, (ISA 3A) Fine to medium grained sand beaches, (ISA 1C) Exposed rocky cliffs with boulder talus base, (ISA 1B) Exposed, solid man-made structures.
